Converse All Stars, Converse Jack Purcell’s and my pink Converse One Stars. I might have been flamed for my choice of colour when I chose this shoe, but my word… I absolutely love them! I grew up in a community where it was a staple to own some sort of Converse design whether it was an All Star or similar design to an All Star like a Soviet sneaker that looked like an All Star. But in my community, in South Africa, the Converse Jack Purcell was the ultimate go to shoe back in the early 2000s. You had two iterations that were the most popular, these being the slip-ons or the standard design that came with shoelaces and those varied depending on which style the individual preferred. For me, personally, it was the slip-on. But this blog is about me discussing the Converse One Star- my personal favourite Converse.
My Converse One Stars are pink. Yes, they really are! Surprisingly they go well with many of my outfits that I throw together, which in all honesty surprised me. But they have really become a staple of my go to shoes in my collection. The thing is, when we talk about Converse, we are talking about the All Star design, that iconic design from the 70s that took the world by storm, and the early days of sneaker and fashion culture in South Africa. Almost everyone owns a pair of All Stars in South Africa or they have, at some point. So why are Converse All Stars so popular? Simple, it’s a shoe that literally goes with anything. It does not conform to a society, a race group or any fashion circle- it’s a sneaker that breaks barriers and continues to break barriers in the world.
With that being said, I need to speak about my love for the One Star. It’s a pretty simple design, yet super dope. The One Star on the side literally gives it that flavour that every shoe aspires to and it radiates off you when you wear it. It was originally introduced to consumers all over the world as a basketball shoe in the 70s. Twenty years later it made its way onto the feet of skaters and started its own culture and own wave. In 2017 it was reintroduced to leave its mark on young sneakerheads like myself. With awesome colourways and with Tyler The Creator leading the resurgence, it seemed like Converse got their timing and target market (these being young creators all around the world) right.
Converse makes you feel special because you feel like you’re a part of something because the brand has been with many people from a young age and they understand the history as well as the sentimental value that it brings. And that’s the beauty of the brand itself! That’s why this brand will never die because individuals are connected to their All Stars, Jack Purcell’s’ and their pink One Stars.
