OG 1s, Jordan 1 mids and Jordan 1 lows. They’ve parted the Jordan purist community in a similar fashion to Moses parting the red sea. I, for one, had recently tweeted that the Jordan 1 lows were the ideal Jordan for summer and although many people agreed with me, the purist community came for me. This is no dig at the purist community but one must realize that we ( the consumers) cannot keep on accepting that the Jordan brand only re-releases the OG 1s in their OG colourways once every four years.
This brings me to the topic at hand, The Jordan 1 mid. A very controversial topic at that. Many people would deem that you’re not really wearing a proper Jordan if it’s not the OG. I can understand and try to accept this, but… has the OG Jordan 1 lost their spark and creativity and allowed for the air Jordan 1 mid to creep up on them allowing for more outlandish and creative colourway? Or is the Jordan 1 mid a way for the Jordan brand to create and experiment with colour ways in the hopes that they would get some kind of feedback from the consumer. But it seems like the air Jordan 1 mid wave was bigger than expected, with Jordan 1 mids selling on the resale markets for quite a bit of money which just goes to show that this shoe has people interested. It could be because it retails cheaper and people just want an air Jordan; or it could be the fact that their colour ways have been more interesting thus drawing the consumer to purchase the mid instead of the OG form. In my opinion it is the latter. The mids have been coming out with the more exciting colourways and we really don’t know what to expect any more in terms of what they’re going to release. This is super exciting!
This is unlike the OG Jordan 1s where we can expect the usual re-releases and between those releases they might throw in some mediocre colour ways to allow the OG bug to hit the new consumers. People might disagree on my thoughts about the Jordan 1 mids having the hotter release over the past year and a half, but I truly do stand by it. We cannot sit here and let our emotions cloud our judgements. I believe that excitement is what the sneaker culture is missing. We should not only be getting excitement from the Jordan brand and their collaborations, but from their in- house design team as well.
The Jordan 1 mid has allowed for creativity to be sparked at Jordan brand again specifically with the 1 colourways. This is the spark that it needed to continue its dominance over the sneaker world. Don’t get me wrong though. It is in fact cool to have all the OG one colourways, but we cannot allow ourselves the impact that the Jordan 1 mids have had on the market over the past year and a half.
